What sits inside each bay

A substation is really a set of individually protected bays sharing a common bus. Understanding what each one does explains why substation work is a specialist trade.

Incomer Bay

Receives supply from the transmission line or upstream substation, with its own breaker and protection.

Transformer Bay

Houses the power transformer that steps voltage between the incoming and outgoing systems.

Outgoing Feeder Bay

One per outgoing circuit — breaker, isolators, CT/PT and relay dedicated to that feeder alone.

Bus Coupler Bay

Links bus sections so load can be transferred between them without a full outage.

What is a feeder bay and why does a substation need more than one?

A feeder bay is the section of a substation dedicated to one outgoing or incoming circuit, housing its own circuit breaker, isolators, current and voltage transformers and protection relay. A substation is built with a separate bay for each feeder so a fault on one circuit can be isolated without switching off the others.

What substation voltage classes does Royal Infra Projects construct?

We execute substation civil works, switchgear erection, bay wiring and commissioning across the 11kV, 33kV and 66kV classes, from ring main unit and distribution transformer sites through to full substation compounds.

Is the substation control and relay system ready for SCADA or remote monitoring?

Control and relay panels are wired and tested to accommodate remote telemetry, so a substation can be brought onto a SCADA or RTU-based monitoring system either at commissioning or as a later upgrade.
